Earlier this week, the government approved a list of priority infrastructure works in its 2009-2011 economic and public finance plans, also including the Messina straits bridge.

'The modernising of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway is a priority project and it is expected to be completed, as indicated in the plan approved by ministers in the next three years,' Matteoli said.

Matteoli said his statement was aimed at denying reports that the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway works would be cancelled.

Impregilo SpA is already building parts of this motorway.
